The Bespoke Process

The process starts with a consultation, where we discuss your desired outcome and any issues you may experience with your feet and footwear. Advice on style and suitable materials are given at this stage.

Measurements, outlines, and an impression of the clients' feet are then taken.

We then move onto the desired style and the choosing of leathers, components, and suitable construction.

‘The Last Comes First’

All of our bespoke shoes are made on bespoke handmade lasts. Each specifically created for the individual client. Bespoke lasts are created from the outlines and measurements of the individual’s feet. Where required, we will make a plaster cast of the client’s feet and use this for the basis of the last. All bespoke lasts are made in our Northampton workshop and are overseen by the maker that has taken your measurements. Last making is the first step in the manufacturing process and at this stage the heel height, toe shape and general aesthetic of the final footwear is made.

Once the lasts have been finalised we can move onto the many processes that are to follow. Pattern cutting for the style of the individual footwear comes next, and this can vary from left and right sides of the bespoke lasts if clients measurements vary. Not all feet are a pair ! Next step is then onto clicking. This is where the leather is cut for the footwear. The leather is then ‘closed’ (stitched) and this gives us the upper that will be lasted (pulled over) the last. Once this has been completed and the footwear is dry, the footwear can be prepared for its first fitting on the client.   At the first fitting the footwear will have a temporary sole and heel attached. At this stage the footwear will be assed for any required adjustments and if none are needed, they will be finalised. If adjustments are required, then these will be carried out and prepared for a further fitting.

And finally, when the footwear is to be finished, the soles and heels will be attached.
